The shop originated in the mid to late ‘70’s. The first mention of its existence is from 1979 when it was owned by a man named John. He had a customer named Miryam who was a huge fan of comics. She began collecting in 1977 and they became good friends. She was one of his saver customers and she always got first dibs at the new shipment. In 1989 John sold the store to her and it became her passion project. She was a fan of Wonder Woman, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and many other comics and tv shows like Start Trek, X-Files and Xena Warrior Princess. Miryam was the face of The Comic Shop and brought it to many different conventions: Home Schoolers, Comics and Anime.

Miryam also hoped to strengthen their connection to the community by collaborating with the San Leandro Public Library. It was important to her that children had access to comics because she wanted them to fall in love with reading.

The locations of the shop have varied over the years. Its original location was 2164 East 14th near McKinley Elementary. It was there for years until Miryam moved the store to a spot on Bancroft and Dutton, which became Paradiso’s Wine room after the store landed at the Green House Market place. It was on the east side of the complex next to Papa Murphy’s. The last and latest jaunt took the shop to Floresta Center where it now resides.

In every location the shop was like a second home to many people of all ages over the years. Some people out in the world may remember some of the notable characters that graced the shop, the ever-present Lee, Jim the knowledgeable and Miryam’s right hand mand, Chris the artistic wonder!

Sadly, Miryam passed away in 2022 and bequeathed the store to her sister Norma who had also worked there in the early ’90s. Now Eric the wizard has taken over the running of the store. Eric is passionate about RPG, Magic the Gathering and he knows his comics. He is exceptional with Neuro Divergent and Autistic children and adult. He is committed to matching the history of knowledge and experience that all who came before brought to the table to keep the level of excellent customer service for all of his guests.
